Navigating the transition from in-person to emergency remote teaching: The importance of teacher agency for language teacher well-being.
Navigating the transition from in-person to emergency remote teaching: The importance of teacher agency for language teacher well-being.
Description:
This project is being conducted in collaboration with Dr Mayumi Kashiwa from Kanda University in Japan and examines the ways in which English language teachers deal with being thrust from in-person teaching into emergency remote teaching (ERT) with a specific focus on emotional well-being during the transition. The pedagogical challenges language teachers face when teaching online during ERT and strategies for dealing with those challenges have been relatively well-documented in recent years. Far less attention, however, has been given to the emotional well-being of teachers during ERT especially in the initial stages when they are expected to navigate the transition from in-person to online teaching at short notice and often with little-to-no training. Understanding the factors impacting emotional well-being during this transition could lead to improved strategies for dealing with the sudden change in teaching environment, and ultimately make the transition smoother.
